Staying in Vietnam legally beyond an initial 90-day e-visa is one of the most critical topics for expats and remote workers. While in-country e-visa renewals remain strictly limited, knowing your options—from border runs to Temporary Residence Cards (TRC)—prevents costly fines and entry bans.

Can You Extend an E-Visa Without Leaving Vietnam?

Under current immigration policy, standard 90-day tourist e-visas cannot be extended inland for another 90 days. Foreigners on tourist visas must exit Vietnam before expiry and re-enter on a newly approved e-visa.

Inland extensions are strictly reserved for:

  • Commercial & Business Visas (DN1/DN2): Sponsored by a legally registered Vietnamese entity.
  • Work Permit / TRC In-Progress: Foreigners waiting for approved labor paperwork with valid company sponsorship.
  • Force Majeure / Medical Emergency: Documented hospitalization in a licensed facility.

The "Visa Run" Strategy: Border Crossings & Flights

Because inland renewal is not permitted for tourists, expats commonly do a "visa run" before their 90 days expire.

Border Crossing / RouteOrigin CityTravel MethodAverage Trip Duration
Moc Bai (Cambodia)Ho Chi Minh CityBus / Private car (70km)Same-day return (6–8 hours)
Lao Bao (Laos)Da Nang / HueMinivan / Sleeper bus10–12 hours return

Crucial: Apply for your new E-Visa 10 days in advance!

Never exit Vietnam for a visa run without having your new approved E-Visa PDF in hand. Border gates will not allow you to re-enter on the same day without a confirmed visa grant letter.

Temporary Residence Card (TRC): 1 to 3 Year Legal Stay

If you plan to live in Vietnam long-term, obtaining a Temporary Residence Card (Thẻ Tạm Trú - TRC) is the proper legal solution. A TRC acts as a multi-entry visa card valid for 1 to 3 years.

Eligible Categories:

  • LĐ1 / LĐ2 (Workers): Foreigners with a valid Work Permit (Giấy phép lao động) or official work permit exemption.
  • ĐT1 – ĐT4 (Investors): Owners or capital contributors of a registered Vietnamese enterprise.
  • TT (Spouses & Dependents): Foreigners married to Vietnamese citizens or dependent children of foreign work permit holders.

TRC Application Process

1

Obtain underlying qualification (Work Permit / Marriage Certificate)

For employees, your sponsoring employer secures your Work Permit through DOLISA. For spouses, foreign marriage certificates must be consular legalized and translated into Vietnamese.
2

Prepare police residency registration (Tạm Trú)

Your landlord must register your temporary stay online with the local ward police. Obtain an official printout / screenshot of this registration.
3

Submit dossier to Immigration Department (Cục Quản Lý Xuất Nhập Cảnh)

File forms NA6 (guaranteeing organization) and NA8 (applicant declaration) along with photos and original passport at the immigration office in Hanoi, HCMC, or Da Nang.
4

Receive your TRC card within 5 working days

Processing takes 5 working days. The government fee is $145 USD for a 1-year card; $155 USD for up to 2 years.

Overstay Penalties and Blacklisting

Overstaying your visa in Vietnam (Quá hạn thị thực) carries severe administrative fines and legal risks under Decree 144/2021/ND-CP:

  • Under 16 days overstay: Fine of 500,000 – 2,000,000 VND (~$20–$80 USD).
  • 16 to 29 days: Fine of 3,000,000 – 5,000,000 VND (~$120–$200 USD).
  • 30 to 89 days: Fine of 10,000,000 – 15,000,000 VND (~$400–$600 USD) and potential forced deportation.
  • 90+ days overstay: Fine of 15,000,000 – 20,000,000 VND, immediate expulsion, and temporary 3–5 year blacklisting from re-entering Vietnam.
