Updated March 2026
Updated March 2026Based on Law 23/2023/QH15 — effective August 2023

Vietnam's e-visa system was completely overhauled in August 2023. The result: a 90-day, multiple-entry e-visa open to all nationalities. If you need to stay longer, or want to work in Vietnam, you'll need a different visa type — but for most visitors and short-term expats, the e-visa is the simplest and cheapest option.

What is the Vietnam E-Visa?

The Vietnam e-visa (also called an electronic visa or EV) is a government-issued travel authorisation you apply for online — no embassy visit, no agent required. It is processed by the Vietnam Immigration Department and delivered to your email as a PDF.

FeatureDetails
DurationUp to 90 days per entry
Entry typesSingle-entry ($25) or Multiple-entry ($50)
Governing lawLaw No. 23/2023/QH15 (effective August 15, 2023)
Valid border gates83 land, sea, and air border gates
Eligible nationalitiesAll countries and territories worldwide
Can it be extended? No — you must exit and reapply
Multiple-entry means you can leave and re-enter Vietnam multiple times within the 90-day window. The 90 days starts from your first entry date, not the date of issue.

Who is Eligible?

All nationalities are eligible for the Vietnam e-visa. However, citizens of countries with visa-free access to Vietnam do not need an e-visa — they can simply arrive.

As of March 2026, countries with visa-free access of 45 days include: France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Russia, UK, Japan, South Korea, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Belgium, Netherlands, Poland, Czech Republic, and others. Check the latest list at the official evisa portal.

If your country has visa-free access, you do not need an e-visa for short stays. The visa-free entry window is 45 days for most European/East Asian nationalities, which is sufficient for holidays. For stays over 45 days, apply for an e-visa.

Fees & Validity

TypeFeeBest for
Single-entry$25 USDOne-off trips, first visit
Multiple-entry$50 USDDigital nomads, frequent travellers, side trips

Fees are paid online and are non-refundable, even if the visa is rejected. Process with a Visa or Mastercard (credit or debit).

Best value: For $25 more, the multiple-entry e-visa lets you make day trips to Cambodia, Laos, or Thailand without losing your 90-day window. Worth it if you plan any regional travel.

Step-by-Step Application

1

Go to the official portal: evisa.gov.vn

Only use evisa.gov.vn — the official government portal. Dozens of third-party sites charge $30–100 extra and simply fill out this same form. There is no advantage to using an agent.
2

Click 'Apply for E-Visa' and select your nationality

Choose "Grant E-Visa for foreigners" from the homepage. Select your nationality from the dropdown — this confirms your eligibility.
3

Fill out the application form (Page 1)

Enter your personal details exactly as they appear in your passport: full name, date of birth, sex, nationality, passport number, issue/expiry dates. Any mismatch with your passport will cause rejection.
4

Enter travel details (Page 2)

Select intended entry date, exit date, entry border gate (airport/crossing), and accommodation address. Choose single or multiple entry.
5

Upload passport photo and portrait photo

Upload the bio page scan and your photo. Both must be clear, properly sized, and under 2MB each. Blurry or incorrectly cropped uploads are the most common rejection reason.
6

Review, pay, and submit

Review all details carefully. Pay the fee ($25 or $50). You'll receive an application code immediately — save this for tracking.
7

Wait 3 working days

Official processing time is 3 working days. In practice, most approvals arrive within 24–48 hours. Check your email (including spam). You can track status using your application code at evisa.gov.vn.
8

Download and print your e-visa PDF

Print the PDF (or save it on your phone). Airlines and border officers will check it before you board. Make sure the name, passport number, and dates are correct. Entry is refused for errors.
Double-check all details before submitting. The fee is non-refundable and corrections require a new application with a new fee. Pay particular attention to: name spelling, passport number, and entry date.

After Approval: What to Bring

  • Printed e-visa PDF (or clearly displayed on phone screen)
  • Valid passport matching the e-visa details
  • Completed landing card (given on the plane or at the border)
  • Onward ticket showing you'll leave within 90 days
  • Hotel/accommodation address for the arrival form

Immigration officers at Vietnamese airports are generally quick and straightforward for e-visa holders. Tan Son Nhat (HCMC) can have queues of 30–60 minutes during peak periods — budget for this.

What if it Gets Rejected?

Rejections are rare but do happen. Most common causes:

  • Name doesn't exactly match passport (including hyphens, middle names)
  • Passport number entered incorrectly
  • Blurry or improperly cropped uploaded photos
  • Previous overstay or blacklist record
  • Passport with less than 6 months validity

If rejected, you must submit a new application with a new fee. Correct the issue and reapply. If you're repeatedly rejected or have a previous overstay, contact the Vietnam Immigration Department directly or consult a licensed immigration lawyer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I extend my e-visa inside Vietnam?

No. The 90-day e-visa cannot be extended. You must exit Vietnam and reapply from outside. There is no minimum waiting period before re-applying.

Can I enter on a visa exemption and then get an e-visa?

You cannot switch to an e-visa while inside Vietnam. If your visa-free window is running out, you must exit and apply for an e-visa before returning, or get a business/work visa with a local sponsor.

Is the e-visa valid from entry date or issue date?

The 90-day window starts from your actual entry date (the day you cross the border), not the date of issue. The e-visa has a "valid from" and "valid until" window — you must enter within that window.

Can I change my entry date after approval?

No. You need to reapply with a new application if your plans change significantly.

What border gates can I use with the e-visa?

All 83 official border gates: all international airports, major land crossings, and sea ports. The specific gates are listed on evisa.gov.vn. You do not need to use the gate listed in your application.

Can I use a third-party visa service?

You can, but there is no benefit — they use the same evisa.gov.vn portal and charge $30–100 extra. Only use a third-party if you have specific difficulties with the online form.
