Ho Chi Minh City is the most expensive city in Vietnam for foreigners, and the biggest single lever on your budget is which district you live in. This guide collects published 2026 figures for the things expats actually pay for, shows where sources disagree, and says plainly what we could not verify.

The short answer

For a single person, one expat guide (ExpatDen, Aug 2026) puts a shoestring month at $700–$1,000, a comfortable one at $1,200–$1,800 and a luxury one above $2,800. Another (ExpatLife, Apr 2026) says comfortable is $900–$1,400 and upscale $1,500–$2,000. Couples: $2,000–$2,800 (ExpatDen) or $1,500–$2,200 comfortable (ExpatLife). Rent is the swing factor: the same 1BR can cost roughly twice as much in Thao Dien as in Binh Thanh.

USD amounts are approximate conversions at roughly 25,000–26,200 VND per dollar. Most published figures are expat blogs and crowd-sourced averages, not official statistics, so treat ranges as a guide and check current prices before you commit.

Rent

Two expat guides give very different ranges for the same districts, mostly because of furnished versus unfurnished and serviced versus local rentals. Both are shown. Numbeo (crowd-sourced, skews to local housing) is lower than both.

Specific to Ho Chi Minh City

Neighbourhood sets your budget
One report estimates a $1,200 Thao Dien one-bedroom at about $500 in Binh Thanh, a 10-minute drive away. If you can live outside the expat core, rent is where you save.
Flooding
Former Thu Duc City, including Thao Dien, is a recurring flood hotspot. The city construction department listed 26 roads flooded by rain since the start of 2026, and in late September 2026 knee-deep flash floods coincided with the year’s highest tides (The Star, 29 Sep 2026). Ask a landlord about flooding at the exact building before signing. We did not check District 7 or Binh Thanh specifically.
Grab prices double in bad weather
Grab fares roughly double in heavy rain or at rush hour (ExpatDen). On cross-town trips the metro can beat traffic.

What we could not verify

We looked for these and found no reliable published figure, so we left them out rather than guess:

  • Studio rents in Phu My Hung / District 7.
  • Consultation fees at FV, Vinmec Central Park and Family Medical Practice (check each provider’s own price list).
  • Fees at individual international schools (ISHCMC, BIS, AIS, SSIS, Renaissance).
  • Water bills, building management fees and a typical lease length.
  • Tet price spikes.
  • The exchange rate on the day you read this — figures use about 26,200 VND per dollar from August 2026.

Electricity tariffs change; check the current schedule on evn.com.vn before relying on a monthly estimate.
